This past week I took a trip to California to attend one of my really good friend's wedding. But, more than that, I was also the hired photographer. I've known Eric since I was a little guy running around playing soccer in the Maryland area. After only a few practices our families became close. The power of soccer.
We've remained friends even though I headed off to college in the Northeast and he remained in Maryland. Whenever I'm in the area I make it a point to visit with him and his family and we always have a great time.
So, when I got the news that he was getting married soon and wanted to see if I would be the photographer I didn't hesitate at all. I've only been to California a couple times before, but had never been to the San Luis Obispo area. Being an explorer by nature that also really intrigued me. We sorted everything out and before I knew it I was getting packed and ready to make my journey.
When I saw my friend and his family it felt like I hadn't seen them in ages and like I had come home of sorts. So as the day approached I had a chance to admire some of the scenery there and feel the California vibe. The day prior to the wedding I went to the rehearsal and was able to scope out some areas that would be nice and just get a sense of how things might go.
Then, the day arrived..
And that is where I begin the story of their wedding day:
And they danced the night away as husband and wife!!
Getting ready photos
The wedding day generally begins with the getting ready photos. Some couples want to capture the "before" photos of their wedding day as well and it is definitely a fun time. Groomsmen and brides-maids take this time to mingle, maybe have some food or drink and just have fun. Its often very relaxed and informal and I enjoy being able to get a lot of candids. I pulled together some getting ready photos from some weddings I've done to show you how each wedding is so different, but all extremely fun from the moment I show up to to do my wedding coverage.
These first two photos are from one of my earlier weddings. This one was on Martha's Vineyard. A very close family and friends. The wedding was down outside in late summer on the beach and the reception was done under a tent.
This next wedding was in the Webster area at the Indian Ranch.
The theme was more of a tropical look. I headed over to the guys house to get some candid photos of them getting ready for the big day. Guys get ready differently.
For the following wedding I headed over to the bride to be's house with the main photographer to get some photos as well. There was a lot going on so I made sure to stay out of their way, but still get some natural looking photos.
For this next wedding I went to the guys house. When I go there they were just sitting around the table hanging out. That was nice as I was able to introduce myself to all the grooms men and hang out for a little bit. I waited to get a couple photos of father and son.
This next wedding was at the Publick House in Sturbridge. Very nice venue. The wedding was held outside and the reception was later held in one of their large ball rooms.
The getting ready photos are a lot of fun and I always recommend that coverage in your wedding package. Its a great time to meet and greet with your photographer and to get some fun photos. This part of the day can be stressful, but with anticipation of the big event. Often times this is where I can get some nice detail shots of shoes, rings, gowns and more. You can even take the time to get some nice father and son photos.
